Rey werd als klein kindje achtergelaten op Jakku en overgeleverd aan Unkar Plutt. Rey groeide op in haar eentje en maakte haar huis in de buik van een gecrashte AT-AT Walker uit de Battle of Jakku.
Ze bleef de hele tijd op Jakku om te wachten op haar familie omdat Rey er vast van overtuigd is dat ze ooit zouden terugkomen om haar mee te nemen.
Rey's leven zou voorgoed veranderen als ze op een avond een BB-8 bevrijdde.
In Maz Kanata's Castle ontdekte ze een Lightsaber in een kist. Toen ze die aanraakte, kreeg Rey een mysterieus visioen waardoor ze beelden zag van Luke Skywalker, de Knights of Ren en zichzelf als kindje dat werd achtergelaten op Jakku. Obi-Wan Kenobi fluisterde haar toe dat ze haar eerste stappen had gezet in the Force.....
